What is important in Fighting?
Good Morning All, I want to share with you something I talked to some of my students about over here in Iraq. I asked them the following, " In a violent confrontation what is or are the keys to victory"? the overwhelming majority said it came down to the answers below: 1) Mindset 2) Will Mindset by far was the most popular response. Often it was coupled with another term like "aggressive-mindset." Most who responded with this answer felt the survivors' training failed to develop the proper mindset to survive and win these encounters. Those that offered "will" as the lacking ingredient usually stated that the training often times does not focus on the will as much in training. Some provided some very well thought out responses and the efforts are much appreciated. The purpose of the exercise was to help me to confirm that most people are being led off track by buzz words and tough talk favored by many chest-thumpers in the self protection industry. All the talk about 'mindset' in this industry makes everyone sound the same. Most people still believe you need to be in a certain 'state' to be able to respond to violence. Color charts are drafted and everyone feels good about how to get ready to 'kick some butt.' And then there's 'will'. Some stated that, will is the missing ingredient that is most dependent on success in a confrontation. My question to them was, "how do you train will,"Think about how useful will is when it comes to things like dieting or working out. Believe me, many in this industry will tell you that's exactly what to do. They'll lecture you on mindset and come up with numerous drills to 'install the will-to-kill. There are people all over the world trying to instill this "mindset" in people to make them a better fighter.
But neither mindset nor will is what is the key to victory in any of the survival training. Let me say this and be absolutely clear, mindset and will alone will never be there when you need it most. They are great traits to have and can be used to re-inforce, but they are not stand alones. Proper realistic training is what is needed to survive a violent confrontation. The problem is very little of this training is available to the general public. Most martial arts schools teach complex and confusing techniques, that very few people will be able to perform in a high stress situation and most would not be effective anyway. In conclusion, the best way to survive a violent encounter is to be the one doing the violence. Train as realistically as possible, if you don't you will not be able to perform when the need presents itself. I am not an advocate of violence, but when violence is the answer it is the only answer. |

One Dimensional Fighting
This morning I was up very early watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship. I did not know James Toney was going to be on the card until a few days ago. I cannot figure out for the life of me, what posessed him to get in that octagon and then to make matters worse, he choses one of the greatest legends in the sport to fight. It was no surprise to me that he got choked out. Personally, I believe Randy Couture, being the class act he is, did not hurt him like he could have nor did he talk trash afterwards. I give him alot of credit for not taking the verbal cheat shots like I am sure most would have done. I don't want to make it sound like I am trashing JT, that is not the case at all. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him and what he has accomplished in the boxing world. But when at the age of 42, after a long and hard boxing career, he wants to pursue a career in Mixed Martial Arts now, he may want to seriously reconsider that move. The next person may not be the gentleman that Randy was and really puts the hurt on Toney and then he will really see he is in the wrong sport at the wrong time and at the wrong age. If he seriously wants to try his hand at MMA, he needs to get off of TV and get with a good trainer and hone his skill, if he can do that, he may have a couple good fights left or at the least, he will be able to defend himself in the cage. I would like to encourage all boxers, kickboxers, and grappling artists to cross train in other disciplines. Because there is no one skill set that is always going to be the answer. |

Learn Krav Maga and Mixed Martial Arts for Physical Wellness
In the vast expanse of martial arts, you can have almost any flavor you want: fast or slow, hard or soft, full contact or no contact. Unfortunately, like anything else, you also can have good or bad classes. The process of choosing a system gets even more complicated because almost all of them have subsystems and variants. An example: Wun Hop Kuen Do, developed by Grandmaster Al Dacascos, includes elements from kung fu, karate, aikido, judo, jujitsu and escrima, a Filipino empty hand and stick fighting system. Budding martial artists should know, for instance, that tae kwon do has two distinct styles that bear little resemblance to one another. The “new” style, developed for the 1988 Olympics, was designed for offensive, full-contact competition. The traditional style has limited contact and emphasizes form, spiritual development and self-defense, elements missing from the sport style. Here’s a brief rundown of the most popular martial arts forms: - Karate: a hard, linear Japanese style that emphasizes striking techniques. During its evolution, karate adopted elements of Zen Buddhism. Buddhism’s influence (whether meditation is part of the class routine) varies from school to school. Styles also vary. Karate is also a competitive sport with matches held in a format similar to boxing.
- Kung Fu: a Chinese system with a rounder, more fluid style than karate. It emphasizes a variety of punches, kicks, grappling techniques, throws and weapons. Physical and mental discipline are considered key elements of kung fu. There are several varieties. Kung fu became popular in the U.S. during the 1970s, thanks largely to Asian martial arts movies and the TV show Kung Fu with David Carradine.
- Tae Kwon Do: an extremely popular Korean martial art that relies on kicking and jumping techniques. As mentioned earlier, the traditional style emphasizes development of both character and fitness. The newer sport style is competitive full-contact.
- Judo: derived from jujitsu, judo was developed by Professor Jiguro Kano in the late 1880s. Jujitsu is considered a somewhat dangerous system because of the risks involved in its joint-locking and choking techniques. Judo, on the other hand, emphasizes throwing and leverage techniques intended to knock opponents off-balance, then put them on the ground.
- Tai Chi: another extremely popular system, tai chi is a style that focuses on inner strength, self-defense, re-directing energy and defensive blocks. Tai chi, like many other systems, has a variety of styles. Chen tai chi is a harder style emphasizing low postures. Yang tai chi is a softer, flowing style that some might think resembles ballet (minus the tutus and pointy shoes). There are many other forms. A word of caution: tai chi looks easy because it is practiced very slowly, a moving meditation, if you will. It isn’t easy.
These are among the better known forms, but many more exist. Krav Maga, a Czechoslovakian system adopted by the Israeli military and police, is gaining popularity. Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art, has both a slow style and a fast, extremely acrobatic style. The list goes on. Picking the Right School We asked martial arts experts, each with years of teaching experience, for advice on how to pick a good school. “It’s not necessarily the best martial artist who makes the best instructor,” said Grandmaster Dacascos, who teaches a small group of students at his home in Honolulu. “It’s the way the person gets the message across, how well they communicate. “Also, look at the students. Are they respectful? Does it look like they’re learning?” He knows what he’s talking about. Grandmaster Dacascos was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame in 1977. A champion many times over, he’s regularly on the covers of national and international martial arts magazines. His students range from kids to cops. Master Steven Bettencourt, a seventh-degree tae kwon do black belt with 35 years of teaching experience, said he first tries to find out what a prospective student wants from martial arts. “People usually say they don’t know what they want. I ask if they’re looking for fitness, self-defense, centering and balance, or if they want something highly competitive with full contact,” he said. He teaches traditional tae kwon do and hapkido in Portland, Oregon, which emphasizes the more spiritual elements of inner peace and self-esteem. And, just as you wouldn’t buy a car without giving it a test drive, try out a class or two before making a decision. Many schools offer complimentary or low-cost introductory classes. Next question: Are you up for the physical demands of martial arts? Experts agree it isn’t necessary to bulk up in the gym for a year before beginning a martial arts program. “Your physical condition, it doesn’t really matter. Martial arts will get you in shape—if you have the staying power to stick with it,” said Grandmaster Dacascos. Plus, he said, kung fu and karate practice burn about 750 calories per hour, about the same as an hour of jumping rope or moderate jogging. In the end, the style you choose probably matters less than how well you click with the instructor and the class—and what you expect to get out of it. |

Thank You
I am sad that NUC ends this way as I always tried to upload my best pic even if I knew beforehand I wouldn't win any prize. it was enjoyable to choose the pic and to look at so many marvellous photos taken by the best Woophy members.
I thank those who were involved and hope one day this may be resumed.
Anyway, I don't know why the initiative of uploading our best month pic should stop. we do not tke pics to win prizes, we take them because we love doing that and share the best with other people around the world.
Is it difficult to open a thread - THE BEST PICS OF THE MONTH - and upload our best pics? I don't think so, so I propose we go on sharing what we consider to be our best work with all Woophians, despite the fact there is no reward at the end. |

Learn Krav Maga and Mixed Martial Arts for Physical Wellness
The recent past has seen a substantial growth of mixed martial arts also called MMA. More and more people are showing interest in mixed martial arts and the number of people learning MMA has already gone to record levels. The reason is you don’t have to learn only one type of self defence and being left in a state of total noobishness. When learning MMA, you are actually leaning many other martial arts simultaneously which is more beneficial to the one who is learning it.
MMA was started keeping in mind the real world scenarios where no weapon to defend oneself was not available and now it’s considered just another self defence discipline like voxing, kick boxing karate etc. whether you want to learn mixed Martial Arts for physical fitness, self defence or competition, it’s going to help you a lot in your personal life. Learning martial arts was once considered an aggressive act but over the years people have started understanding its benefits.
Parents all over the world enroll their children in martial arts Self Defence Courses thinking that it would help their children in many ways, but only a few children learn martial arts properly. The mistake parents do is they don’t do prior research before enrolling and think that all martial arts courses are the same and forget the fact that the trainers are the most important when choosing self defence classes. A who is bogged down to the same kind of repetitive training will certainly bore the kids and they will quickly lose interest in learning self defence. A good trainer is always innovative, cool and tough to make the children actively take part in classes. |

MCMAP still going strong after retirement with Hanshi Wright
MCMAP still going strong after retirement Lance Cpl. Franklin E. Mercado CAMP LEATHERNECK, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan – Fighting is a way of life in the Marine Corps, but not all Marines are born Warriors. That’s where the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program comes into play. The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program or MCMAP is designed to teach Marines and Sailors how to defeat the enemy in close combat and defend themselves in crucial situations. Some Marines choose to just learn the basic MCMAP moves, while others take full advantage of the wide range of techniques the program has to offer. Col. George Bristol, MCMAP founder, created the program in 2000. It was designed as an integrated fighting system for Marines. Not only does it build physical and mental strength, but it also builds character, said Retired Gunnery Sgt. Leon Wright, a co-founder of the MCMAP program. “Character is what sets us apart as warriors,” said Wright. “Without character you’re like a three legged chair, you’re useless.” These three things, along with hard work and dedication, are what Marines need to be successful in MCMAP, said Wright. Learning new moves with each belt, Marines must have a certain amount of sustainment time in moves and techniques they’ve already learned in previous belts. “It’s not just about learning or teaching how to fight,” said Wright. “It’s about the intangibles you need to develop a Marine for his whole career.” Although he’s known as one of the three Marine Corps subject matter experts in MCMAP, Wright still believes the basics are the most important part of honing your skills in MCMAP. “Everyone can fight and beat someone up,” said Wright. “It isn’t just about that. It’s about tie-ins and making sure you don’t forget the basics.” Although his knowledge of MCMAP is vast, Wright always returns to the fact that it’s about dedication and character. This is a testimony to the commitment he has for the program and for the people he’s worked with along the way. “I can say without hesitation that the success of MCMAP is due in no small measure to the efforts of Marines such as Wright,” said Bristol. “He is still active in the development in the program. He’s what I wanted MCMAP to be.” With Marines like Wright working on the program, MCMAP is reaching a new level among service members, and with former instructors and service members such as Wright leading the way, it will continue to grow and from where it began a decade ago. |

Congratulations to Phil Hollis on his recent promotion to Black Belt. He started with Hanshi Wright back in 2003 and remains as the longest training student in Afghanistan. Phil's test was grueling consisting of ground fighting and stand up fighting, like only Souseiki Ryu can do it, culminating in Street Fighting. CONGRATULATIONS Phil, it was well deserved. |
